Causes of knee arthritis

Knee arthritis can be divided into three types: degenerative arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and degenerative arthritis after injury.

1Degenerative arthritis

Degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis (OA)) is the most common knee arthritis and is a degenerative disease that slowly wears out the joint cartilage. It is commonly found among the middle-aged and elderly.

2Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is inflammatory arthritis which occurs when the autoimmune antibody attacks the joints, destroying the joint cartilage. This typically appears in middle-aged women in their thirties and usually occurs in the knee joints but can appear in other joints like the wrist.

3Degenerative arthritis after injury
Degenerative arthritis occurring after injury may seem like osteoarthritis at a glance but is different since it occurs years after a fracture and ligament injury, or a meniscal injury.

Arthritis diagnosis
관절염 진단표
Arthritis diagnosis Joint condition Treatment method
Early Stage Minor joint damage Exercise therapy : aerobic exercise and obesity care
Medicinal therapy : Painkillers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Middle Stage The cartilage is ragged and worn-out, and the end of the bone has grown pointy Arthroscopy : An operation that tidies the ragged cartilage, and cuts off the pointy end of the bone
Orthopraxis : When leg deformation is severe, it stops the progress of arthritis by changing the center of gravity
Late Stage The cartilage has been damaged extensively and it forces the bones to almost touching each other Artificial Joint Surgery : A method which removes a damaged part of the joint and replaces it with an artificial joint / replaces the whole joint
